The Little Free Library® movement was founded in 2012 in the USA. Since then, and with the increasing global reach of the annual World Book Day® celebration, book exchange boxes have become a hugely popular addition to communities all over the world. Also known by many other names including a book swap box, a community library, a free library box, and the collective mini libraries, an Old Tom’s Workshop outdoor book exchange box is fantastic for schools, community groups, and charitable organisations.

Each Old Tom’s Workshop outdoor book exchange box is handmade to an exceptional standard in our UK workshop. Now on version 2.0, we build our boxes from the ultra premium Medite ‘Tricoya Extreme’ – a phenomenal MDF panel which far exceeds the performance and durability of other sheet materials in outdoor conditions. We fix the panels together using specialist premium SPAX screws and industrial grade Everbuild D4 Premium Wood Adhesive.

The standard size of our book exchange boxes is approx 47cm (18.5″) wide, 37cm (15″) deep, and 60cm (23.6″) high, but we can build any size you like! The height of the box from ground level is fully customisable.

We can paint our book boxes any colour, including specific shades from the RAL colour chart.

The windows in our book boxes are made from high quality transparent Perspex which is easy to clean and safer than regular glass. We also use durable cast iron hardware with stainless steel screws, which feels great to the touch and performs well outdoors.

Customised solid oak plaques can be fixed to the box above the door and can include logos and/or text.

Prices start from £1250 +VAT. Delivery and/or installation charges may also apply if required.
